GASTRIC ULCERATION IN THOROUGHBRED RACE HORSES

The assessment of Protexin Pro-Soothe pH/Acid Ease on the effect of gastric ulcers in racing thoroughbreds

Trial carried out by Dr. Celia Marr BVMS, MVM, PhD, DEIM, MRCVS

Department of Farm Animal and Equine Medicine and Surgery

Royal Veterinary College, University of London

The effect of the product Protexin Pro-Soothe pH/Acid Ease on thoroughbred racing horses was assessed.

Sixteen two and three-year-old thoroughbred race horses currently in training had a gastroscopy prior to and on the completion of administration of Protexin Pro-Soothe pH/Acid Ease. The extent of lesion was assessed on the basis of a lesion score prior to and following the completion of administration with the product. The product was used at the manufacturers recommended doses for four weeks.

Summary of Results:

The lesion number was significantly reducedfollowing treatment (P=0.005766)

There was no significant change in lesion severity (P= 0.130)

11 horses have improved.

Horses 7, 12, 13 and 15 have not improved and of these, horses 12 and 15 were the most severely affected.

Horse 5 had no ulcers on either examination.

Conclusion:

Pro-soothe pH/Acid Ease proves to be very useful in the reduction of gastrointestinal ulcers within a population of Thoroughbreds.  In the more severely affected cases, additional therapy may be warranted.
